Protein powder in coffee is protein coffee
Protein coffee is praised for possible weight-loss advantages, but is it really healthy? Here’s what dietitians want you to know. Protein coffee has everyone’s interest.
It’s tough to pinpoint the precise time when protein coffee matured to the next “BIG THING” in beverages. Though several say that TikToker @happyhealthyolivia’s video explaining her frothing a Premier Protein drink and combining it to her hot coffee made protein coffee—aka a proffee.
After that, other coffee businesses have tried to get the mileage out of it and joined the bandwagon, and many companies started launching their versions of proffee or the companies which already had launched started promoting heavily.
But just how healthy is this trend, and is there a best way to brew and drink it? We talked to a registered dietitian to find out.
What is proffee?
You can get protein coffee one of two ways. Get the readily available premix from the market or get your favourite coffee and mix it with your choice of protein powder.
It’s the mixture of your preference of coffee blended with either a premixed protein drink or a protein powder.
Emma Backes, a registered dietitian in St. Cloud, Minnesota
While there’s no concrete agreement between the experts on the quantity of protein that should be added to your coffee, Backes recommends adding 10 to 20 grams of protein.
“That would be approximately half to one bottle of premixed drink or around a single scoop of protein powder,” she adds. For example, 2 eggs give 12 grams of protein, while 3 ounces of salmon contains 17 grams of protein.
Proffee timings
Some people don’t fancy breakfasts. Others just can’t (or won’t) get time in the morning for a breakfast. So if your go-to is simply a cup of coffee in the morning, combining protein to your cup can be a great idea to fuel your day and to support tide you over till the next snack.
Protein after a hard workout helps promote muscle repair and growth, so another way of looking at it as a post-workout beverage.

Proffee nutrition
There are so numerous protein powders and protein drink choices out there that can be added to your favourite coffee. The nutrition in protein coffee will change, depending on the type of protein and quantity of protein preferred. The nutrition will also depend on the way coffee is made, in particular. The overall nutrition will differ with each ingredient added to coffee, even adding sugar will change the nutritional values.
Here’s a peek at the nutritional outline of proffee made with approx 250 ml (or a cup) of brewed coffee and 20 grams of unflavored collagen peptides.

Proffee downside
Getting too much protein too fast can upset your gastrointestinal system.
Emma Backes, a registered dietitian in St. Cloud, Minnesota
If you’re an enthusiast of protein coffee, take a goal for just a single cup of the drink daily. Also, you don’t require to depend on protein powder for most of your protein needs throughout the day. Whole-food protein sources are ideal. And if you are an enthusiast of a healthful breakfast, frequently consuming protein coffee in the early mornings could add needless calories to your morning.
Depending on how you consume your coffee, a protein coffee could have way added calories compared to typically you would have and normally is extra compared to a meal replacement.
Bridget Wood, a registered dietitian nutritionist in Reno, Nevada
Proffee is not for everyone, some may have lower protein needs—for example, people with chronic kidney disease—should avoid protein coffee.
If you are pregnant, avoid protein coffee because of the amount of coffee it would demand to mix in protein powder.
